Radio Teleswitch electricity meters to switch-off in Moray

Households are being urged to be aware of an important change this month that could affect their electricity and heating supplies.

From Monday 30 June, the technology that supports a type of electricity meter known as Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) meters is being permanently switched off across the UK.

Without it, they may no longer work properly – potentially disrupting electricity supplies.

A small number of homes in Moray are believed to have the meters – and Moray Council Older Person’s Co-Champion, Cllr Sonya Warren, says it’s important to check: “If you have an RTS meter, your electricity supplier should be in touch to arrange an upgrade before the deadline, but if you’re not sure if you are affected, there are a few simple ways to check.

“It’s most likely to affect you if your home is heated with storage heaters, or by electricity and there may be a box next to your meter with ‘Radio Teleswitch’ written on it.

“If there is no gas supply in your area, or you get cheaper electricity at certain times of day, that may also be a sign you are affected.

“If you’re unsure, it’s  worth giving your electricity supplier a call, just to be safe and provide reassurance.”

If you’re unsure who your supplier is, you can find out on the Ofgem website.

Cllr Peter Bloomfield, Moray’s Older Person’s Co-Champion, added: “It’s important to note that most people will be unaffected by this change and there’s certainly no reason to panic, but there’s every reason to check nonetheless.

“It’s also important to look out for those in vulnerable circumstances, and to make sure they are aware of this upcoming change. Although you should have been contacted by your electricity supplier, there is time to act if this has not yet happened.”

Both councillors have warned of the risks posed by scammers.

Cllr Warren said: “Unfortunately, there will be people looking to take advantage of this situation, and if you are contacted by someone saying you have to pay to replace your meter, this may be a scam.”

Cllr Bloomfield agreed: “Your supplier will replace your meter for free – this is not something you will have to pay for. It’s also important to be aware that if your supplier says they can’t replace your meter before 30 June, you can make a complaint and they must ensure a suitable alternative is in place before the deadline.”

More information about the RTS meter switch-off is available on the Ofgem website.
