Reading award celebration for Moray school
Elgin Academy has become the first school in Moray to achieve Silver Reading Schools accreditation from the Scottish Book Trust.
A team of pupil reading leaders has been working with fellow pupils, staff and parents to build and sustain a culture of reading for learners within the school and across the wider community.
Successful projects have included author visits, family and community events, book gifting, teaching the teachers, departmental reading teams, podcasts and whole-school literacy events, as well as assembly presentations and visits to local primary schools to share books and stories.
Librarian, Shelagh Toonen, is thrilled and proud that Elgin Academy’s commitment to putting reading at the heart of the school, had been recognised.
“This initiative has provided us with a unique opportunity to showcase all the good work we already have in place whilst enabling further collaboration within the whole school community, resulting in additional creative activities and events,” she said.
“This award recognises our commitment to developing and embedding our reading culture in Elgin Academy. We are particularly proud of our team of reading leaders who excel in their role and are a credit to the school.”
Congratulating the school on achieving silver accreditation, assessors from the Scottish Book Trust commented: “The huge amount of work and dedication you have put into the programme really shone through your application – what an incredible reading environment for your learners.”
