Road repairs to increase as crews begin safe return to work next week
ROAD repairs in Moray will be increased as more roads maintenance staff from Moray Council return to work.
During lockdown, following government guidance, only emergency repairs were carried out. This was due to all non-essential work being halted. Within this period staff have been trained for potential redeployment to support waste and recycling collections, supported teams undertaking grass cutting and assisted with the re-opening of recycling centres.
From 29 June, initially a team of 10 roads workers operating from depots throughout Moray, will return to work to undertake urgent repairs on a priority basis. The initial focus will be on a backlog of pothole and street lighting repairs. As the Scottish Government gives further approval to progress through the construction re-start plan, the number of teams returning will gradually increase.
Roads Maintenance Manager, Mark Atherton said: “We still face challenges – fluctuation in staffing levels and physical distancing requirements are just two of these. However we’re confident we can safely reintroduce the service in a phased and controlled way.
“We know that as more people go to work there will be an increase in reports of potholes or other road issues. Please continue to be patient, we are adapting to a new way of working and our teams will be following strict social distancing and hand hygiene procedures to keep themselves and the wider public safe.”
