Search begins for Moray’s next Young Musician

School-aged musicians across Moray are being invited to take part in the fourth annual Moray Young Musicians competition, with entries for the 2026 event now officially open.

The diverse competition is open to any pupil in Moray who sings or plays an instrument, regardless of experience level.

Entrants must complete an online entry form by Friday 28 November 2025.

All entrants will receive a certificate, with trophies awarded to the top three performers in the final.

The competition has become a key event in the local music calendar, with the overall winner going on to compete at the highly prestigious Scottish Young Musician and Rotary Young Musician competitions.

2025 Young Musician winner Chloe Campbell said: “I enjoyed representing traditional Scottish music in the competition and playing some of my favourite tunes. I was so pleased that I won despite the fact I was one of the youngest in the competition. It was such an amazing opportunity to represent Moray in the national final, it was definitely an experience I will never forget.

“To anyone entering this year I would say just try your best and most importantly have fun. Don't put too much pressure on yourself because music is much more than just winning competitions - it’s about following your passion and enjoying what you do.”

Chair of Moray Council’s Education, Communities and Leisure Services Committee, Cllr Kathleen Robertson, said: “I almost hesitate to call this a competition, because it’s every bit as much a celebration of the musical talent we have here in Moray. It’s about more than winning – it’s about recognising the time, discipline and effort young people put into developing their skills. I’d like to wish every participant the best of luck, and encourage anyone thinking of entering to go for it!”

Alexander Davidson, Principal Teacher of Music Instruction & Performance, remarked: “Although Moray is a relatively small area, the level of talent that emerges year-after-year is exceptional. What stands out just as much is how many of these young performers have been supported through council-run services such as instrumental music lessons in schools,  Moray Music Centre or extra-curricular ensemble at school. It’s a powerful reminder of how impactful these initiatives are.”
