Spey Viaduct Listed Building Consent submitted and vegetation clearance works begin
Following the partial collapse of the Garmouth Viaduct, also known as the Spey Viaduct, Moray Council will this week submit an application for Listed Building Consent for the removal of the two failed sections of the bridge.
The application is based on dismantling the failed sections into smaller sections, to allow a more controlled and safe removal process than could be achieved if the spans were to be removed in one piece. This follows agreement for the next steps for the bridge at Full Council on 28 January 2026.
The detailed methodology will be agreed once a contractor is appointed and able to carry out further assessment. Submitting the application now, based on the most likely removal process, helps speed up progress and avoid unnecessary delay but could be subject to change once the specific methodology is advised.
No replacement works are proposed within this application.
The council has also confirmed it will be carrying out vegetation clearance along Stynie Road, between Mosstodloch and Garmouth, starting from Monday 16 February for up to three weeks. The works will allow temporary diversion routes for walkers and cyclists and involve trimming back roadside vegetation on the verges and along fence lines to improve visibility and road width.
This is being undertaken in anticipation of increased walking and cycling activity following the closure of the Garmouth Viaduct.
Once the initial clearance is completed, vegetation growth will be monitored throughout the year. Any further cutting will take place after the bird nesting season to ensure compliance with environmental guidance.
Moray Council remains committed to ensuring that all works related to the Garmouth Viaduct are carried out sensitively, in accordance with the viaduct’s listed status, while prioritising public safety and the long-term stewardship of the structure.
