St Peter’s RC Primary School praised for significant progress following Education Scotland follow-up inspection
St Peter’s RC Primary School in Buckie has been praised for the significant improvements made across the school following a recent follow-up inspection by Education Scotland, with inspectors recognising stronger leadership, improved learning and teaching, better support for pupils and rising attainment.
Inspectors highlighted the role of Acting Head Teacher at the time of inspection, Lesley MacLennan, and school staff in rebuilding a strong sense of ambition and pride within the school community. Pupils are now more involved in decision-making, all children take part in leadership groups, and staff have introduced more consistent approaches to learning, teaching and assessment. Attendance has improved overall since the original inspection, while attainment in literacy, numeracy and health and wellbeing has shown positive gains.
The report also recognised improved support for children with additional support needs, stronger quality assurance processes and better use of data to track progress and raise attainment. Inspectors concluded that the school has made good progress and confirmed that no further inspection visits are required.
While welcoming the progress made, inspectors identified a small number of areas for continued improvement. These include increasing parental involvement in school improvement planning, further extending challenge for children who are exceeding expectations, strengthening support planning and target-setting for some pupils with additional support needs, and continuing efforts to improve attendance, which remains below the national average.

The progress made since the original inspection demonstrates what can be achieved when a school community works together with a clear focus on improvement. The inspection report states that the school has the capacity to continue its improvement journey and that future progress will be reported through Moray Council’s normal arrangements for monitoring and reporting on school performance.
