STEM Starts Centre announces summer sessions following strong demand

The popular STEM Starts Discovery Centre in Elgin has announced it will be opening its doors for three weeks of free sessions over the summer following a clear desire from families across Moray for additional sessions.

Previous sessions have demonstrated a growing demand for increased public access to the centre. Pilot taster sessions have been regularly oversubscribed, with families keen for greater availability.

The centre is part of the Moray Growth Deal’s £4.8m Early Years STEM project and is a long-term investment in early years STEM education, with the aim to inspire young people, build confidence and support skills development.

Public sessions in the coming weeks are free of charge and will operate across nine days over a three-week period with four sessions per day. This will provide a total of 36 sessions for over 1,800 children aged 3-8 and adults. The dates for these sessions are;

  • 14th, 15th, and16th July
  • 21st, 22nd, and 23rd July
  • 28th, 29th, and 30th July

Since opening in February, the centre has welcomed 790 adults and 1,900 children from across Moray, through a combination of school visits, early learning sessions, and limited public visits. The popularity of the centre has highlighted the importance of the service as well as the need to open it to the public as the centre explores service models that could include paid access.

Chair of Moray Council’s Education, Children’s and Leisure Services Committee, Cllr Kathleen Robertson, highlights the benefit of opening doors to the public.

“This next series of taster sessions is an important phase in the development of the STEM Starts Discovery Centre as we explore opportunities to expand our offering, enabling more families to benefit from this unique, high-quality, hands-on STEM experience.

“Widening access allows the programme to continue to support its core mission of
providing meaningful and engaging learning opportunities that inspire the next generation and strengthen future pathways into STEM.”

Tickets will become available at 6pm on Wednesday 8th July. For more information about the sessions and how to book, visit the link below.
