Storm Amy weather warning
UPDATE:
The Amber weather warning has now been extended to cover more of Moray from midnight, including most of the north east of the region. The new warning will last until 9pm on Saturday.
The Met Office has issued an Amber ‘be prepared’ weather warning for parts of Moray, with Storm Amy forecast to bring strong winds from this evening (Friday 3 October) into Saturday evening.
For the parts of the region not covered by the Amber warning a Yellow ‘be aware’ warning has been issued, also for high wind. The initial Amber warning covers northwest Moray, with a separate Amber warning in place for high winds across almost all of Moray on Satursday.
Potential Impacts
Key risks include:
- Damage to trees and structures due to very strong winds, with gusts potentially reaching 60–70 mph
- Travel disruption, including potential road closures and delays or cancellations to public transport services
- Power outages in some areas are possible, especially where winds are strongest
- Coastal impacts, including large waves and wave overtopping in exposed areas – caution is advised near harbours, cliff edges and sea walls
Flooding
We're likely to see several small burns running high and some gullies getting blocked with debris due to leaf fall. This is more likely to occur in the south of Moray. The flooding risk is currently low, but this is being monitored by council officers.
Roads and Trees
Winds of this strength have the potential to bring down trees, especially those already weakened by previous storms. Fallen trees on roads should be reported to the Council using the contact details below.
- To report fallen trees on roads, call: 0300 123 4565 (during office hours)
Open Spaces teams will respond where safe to do so, but in severe conditions, road closures may be necessary until debris can be safely removed.
Please avoid any areas affected by fallen or hanging trees, and do not attempt to clear them yourself. These pose a serious safety risk.
