Storm Boelo weather warning
The Met Office has issued an Amber weather warning for Moray, with Storm Boelo forecast to bring very strong winds from 9pm on Saturday (24 October) through Sunday (25 October).
A wider Yellow weather warning for wind is also in place from 12 noon on Saturday (24 October). Strong winds are also expected to be accompanied by periods of heavy rain and frequent showers.
Potential Impacts
Key risks include:
- Flying debris is likely and could lead to injuries or danger to life
- Damage to trees and structures due to very strong winds, with gusts potentially reaching 60–70 mph
- Travel disruption, including potential road closures and delays or cancellations to public transport services
- Power outages in some areas are possible, especially where winds are strongest
- Coastal impacts, including large waves and wave overtopping in exposed areas – caution is advised near harbours, cliff edges and sea walls
Flooding
Surface water flooding is the main concern for Moray on Friday, particularly around Keith, Dufftown and Aberlour, where heavy rain and gullies blocked by leaves and debris could cause localised flooding. Smaller burns may rise, but the risk from major rivers remains low.
Further heavy rain on Saturday could increase the risk of flooding, with Kingston being monitored closely due to rising river levels and high spring tides.
On Sunday, the main risk is expected along the coast, where high spring tides, large waves and a possible tidal surge could lead to coastal flooding.
Roads and Trees
Winds of this strength have the potential to bring down trees and branches, particularly those already weakened by previous storms. Fallen trees on roads should be reported to the council using the contact details below.
- To report fallen trees on roads, call: 0300 123 4565 (during office hours)
Open Spaces teams will respond where safe to do so, but in severe conditions, road closures may be necessary until debris can be safely removed.
Please avoid any areas affected by fallen or hanging trees, and do not attempt to clear them yourself. These pose a serious safety risk.
Residents are also advised to secure loose outdoor items, including bins, garden furniture and trampolines, and prepare for possible power cuts.
