‘Story Garden’ takes Summer Reading Challenge outdoors
Primary school children across Moray are being invited to step into a world of imagination and nature as this year’s Summer Reading Challenge launches with the theme ‘Story Garden: Adventures in Nature and the Great Outdoors’.
Running in local libraries from Saturday 21 June, the 2025 challenge encourages young readers to explore the natural world through books, blending storytelling with the wonders of the outdoors.
Children can sign up at any Moray library to take part in the free programme, which asks participants to read six books over the summer.
Audiobooks and eBooks also count toward the challenge, and children will earn sticker rewards along the way and a medal on completion.
The challenge goes beyond books – with each library offering treasure hunts, puzzles and themed activities; with some also running special events.
To take part children must be library members, or they can sign up for free when joining the challenge. A parent or guardian is needed to verify membership.
Chair of Moray Council’s Education, Children’s and Leisure Services Committee, Councillor Kathleen Robertson, said: “My own children took part in the Summer Reading Challenge when they were in primary school, and had a wonderful time.
“I hope this year’s Challenge helps other young people discover the magic of reading, it’s such a great way to spark their imagination. With the number of activities planned at our libraries over the summer months, I’ve no doubt that they’ll have a brilliant time.”
The annual Summer Reading Challenge is developed by The Reading Agency and aims to support literacy and a lifelong love of reading in children. It runs until Saturday 30 August.
