Students get hands-on tasters of career options in land industries

Senior pupils from Moray had the chance to attend a ‘Land Based Sector’ day at Dipple Farm in Fochabers last week.

The students took part in a range of practical workshops led by local employers to get a taste of the types of careers on offer on their doorstep.

In the morning the pupils had talks and demonstrations by employers to highlight the vast range of opportunities available to them in the sector in Moray. This was followed by a series of workshops.

Moray Council’s education support officer, Maxine Scott, said:

“This was a brilliant learning experience - the pupils were incredibly engaged and really enjoyed learning from successful local employers. We’re confident that the day allowed the young people to get some hands-on experience and a greater understanding of the skilled jobs available in the sector, which they may wish to pursue.”

The event was organised by the Land Based Sector group, part of the Moray Skills Pathway initiative. The group aims to get Moray’s young students at least four experiences of each of the eight growth sectors before they make their subject choices for the senior phase

These eight growth sectors include: Early Learning and Childcare; Health and Social Care; Construction; Engineering; Food, Drink & Tourism; IT & Creative Industries; Business/ Professional Services and the Land based Sector.

Famous for its colony of dolphins, fabulous beaches and more malt whisky distilleries than any where else in Scotland, Moray is a thriving area and a great place to live. Nestling between Aberdeenshire and the Highlands, Moray stretches from Tomintoul in the south to the shores of the Moray Firth, from Keith in the east to Brodie Castle in the west.
