Summer Reading Challenge 2026

Summer Reading Challenge 2026 to launch

Primary school children across Moray are being encouraged to turn up the volume on reading this summer as the Summer Reading Challenge returns with the theme ‘Read to the Beat’.

The 2026 challenge – which launches in local libraries from Saturday 20 June – challenges young readers to discover the connection between stories and music, exploring how they can inspire imagination and creativity.

The annual event is developed by The Reading Agency and, for 2026, is being delivered in partnership with Universal Music UK.

Children can sign up at any Moray library to take part in the free programme, which challenges participants to read six books over the summer holidays.

Audiobooks and eBooks also count towards the challenge, with children receiving sticker rewards as they progress and a medal on completion.

The challenge is designed to keep children reading during the summer break while encouraging them to explore new stories, characters and ideas. Libraries across Moray will also offer activities and events linked to the theme throughout the summer.

To take part, children must be library members, or they can sign up for free when joining the challenge. A parent or guardian needs to be on hand to confirm membership.

It’s a hugely popular part of the libraries summer programme, with more than 800 children taking part last summer.

Chair of Moray Council’s Education, Children’s and Leisure Services Committee, Councillor Kathleen Robertson, said: “The Summer Reading Challenge is something my own children took part in and very much enjoyed, and I’m glad to see it return for another year.

“Music plays an important role in my life, and I think it’s wonderful and very relevant that this year’s theme explores the often overlooked link between songs and reading. I encourage families to visit their local library and make the most of everything on offer over the summer.”
