Moray's surface dressing programme begins
Road users in Moray are being asked to take extra care over the next five weeks, as the council begins its annual surface dressing programme
23 miles of roads across the region have been clearly marked with signs advising drivers to slow down to 20mph where work is taking place.
This is to ensure the safety of road users and workers, as well as to help protect newly treated surfaces and vehicles from damage caused by loose stone chippings.
Surface dressing helps to extend the life of roads by protecting them from wear and tear caused by traffic and weather. It also improves grip and surface quality, and helps makes the road waterproof.
The process must be done in warmer, relatively dry weather – which is why it’s scheduled for the summer months.
It involves the distribution of bitumen followed by an application of stone chippings, which are then rolled into the road surface. Before the road is open to traffic, it is swept to remove the vast majority of chippings – although some loose chippings do still occur, and there will be a short period of time before these are fully swept away.
In addition, in urban areas, pedestrians should avoid any unnecessary walking on the newly laid dressing and should also check their footwear before entering homes or vehicles.
Councillor Marc Macrae, Chair of Moray Council’s Economic Development and Infrastructure Services Committee, said: “We understand that roadworks can be an inconvenience, especially during tourist season and we will be doing our best to minimise disruption for locals and visitors alike.
“Loose chippings can make the road surface feel slippery and can cause damage if speeds are not reduced; but by slowing down, drivers can keep themselves, others and their vehicles safe.
“We are very grateful for the continued patience and understanding of the public while this essential work is carried out.”
