Update on Keith Grammar School fire
We have now received confirmation that the small fire at Keith Grammar School on Friday evening was caused by a tumble dryer in the Home Economics department.
The school will remain closed to pupils on Monday and Tuesday while repair work is carried out, smoke damage is cleaned, and the affected area is safely isolated. While the building is safe to use, the Home Economics classrooms will remain out of use for the time being. Pupils will continue learning online during this period, with a return to in-person learning planned for Wednesday.
Council Leader, Cllr Kathleen Robertson said: “I would like to thank school staff for their swift work in establishing online learning arrangements and ensuring minimal disruption to pupils’ education. We would also like to thank pupils and families for their patience, understanding and adaptability as these arrangements were put in place.
“My sincere thanks go to Head Teacher Mr Duffy and the education staff who attended the school in the immediate aftermath of the incident and throughout the weekend. I would also like to acknowledge the professionalism of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Police Scotland, who responded quickly after the alarm was raised.”
Moray Council Chief Executive, Karen Greaves, added: “Staff at the sports and community centre, who managed the evacuation of the swimming pool and centre calmly and efficiently during a particularly busy period when the electricity supply was disconnected as a safety measure, are also to be commended.
“This incident has demonstrated the strength of our community and the value of preparation, training and partnership working. I am incredibly proud of the calm, professional and resilient response shown by everyone involved, and we look forward to welcoming pupils back to the school on Wednesday.”
