What’s inside? Help solve the mystery of the Elgin Town Hall time capsule

Moray Council and Elgin Town Hall are encouraging people to come forward who may hold information about a time capsule found hidden at the town hall.

During early construction works for the rejuvenation of Elgin Town Hall, a time capsule was discovered behind the foundation stone in the foyer entrance.

The foundation stone, salvaged from Elgin’s original town hall on Moray Strret, was relocated to ‘the new’ Elgin Town Hall on 29 June 1960, with the capsule placed inside at that time. After research with the library archives, little else is known about why it was placed there, who created it, or what may be inside

New information about what is inside and why it was placed there will allow Moray Council and Elgin Town Hall to learn more about its past and then add its own selection of items for future generation to explore once repositioned.

Cllr Macrae, Chair of the Economic Development and Infrastructure Committee and Growth Deal lead commented; “Elgin Town Hall has had a role to play in many of our lives over the years, and the stories from others could bring back forgotten memories of years gone by. As the important renovation work continues, we can plan how to honour the capsule by repositioning it back where it belongs in the town hall.”

Jackie Andrews, Director, at Elgin Town Hall for the Community said; “The time capsule was an amazing discovery that could offer an exciting glimpse into the past and unlock forgotten items which take us back in time. If you have any information about the history of the capsule, we would love to hear from you.”
