Wildfire risk summit to take place

A multi-agency summit is taking place in Elgin this afternoon (Thursday 26 February), bringing together key partners to strengthen the area’s response to the growing risk of wildfires.

The summit, agreed by the Community Planning Board last year, marks a significant step towards developing an Integrated Wildfire Management Plan for Moray. The plan will set out how agencies and land managers can work together to prevent wildfires, respond effectively to incidents and build long-term resilience.

Representatives from various partners and organisations have been invited to attend – including Moray Council, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and the Scottish Government. The event will also draw on the experience of the Cairngorms National Park Authority, which has led collaborative approaches to wildfire management at a national park level.

The summit follows a series of significant wildfire incidents across Moray last year and comes amid increasing national concern about the impact of climate change and human activity on wildfire risk.

Chair of the Community Planning Board, Councillor Kathleen Robertson, said: “Wildfires are an increasing threat to our communities, our environment and our economy. Today’s summit is about bringing together partners from across the public and private sectors to strengthen collaboration and agree a shared vision with clear, practical next steps. By working collectively - from emergency services and government agencies to land managers and local organisations - we can reduce the risk of wildfires and ensure Moray is better prepared and more resilient for the future.”
