Work to begin on Elgin heritage project
Work is to begin next week on the first phase of a major heritage project in Elgin.
A new all-abilities path is be constructed to the summit of Ladyhill, from where a monument of the 5th Duke of Gordon looks down on the town.
Ladyhill is also the site of the ruins of Elgin Castle which will be the starting point of the Castle to Cathedral to Cashmere heritage trail.
The project, which is being funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, will link the ruined castle with the town’s most famous landmark – Elgin Cathedral – and the world-famous Johnstons cashmere centre.
Castle to Cathedral to Cashmere will provide an improved interpretation of Elgin’s history and heritage through a variety of mediums and is being backed by, among others, Moray Council, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, the Moray Society and the Elgin Fund.
The new access route on Ladyhill is expected to be completed by late summer.
Moray Council area stretches from Tomintoul in the south to the shores of the Moray Firth, from Keith in the east to Forres in the west.
