Elgin Academy inspection report published

Education Scotland inspectors recognised the positive progress Elgin Academy has made in their latest report, while also highlighting opportunities for further improvement.

The follow-up inspection looked at how well the school has responded to key recommendations made in June 2024.

Inspectors found that staff and school leaders have made strong efforts to improve teaching, learning, and the curriculum. Most teachers are now using more consistent methods in the classroom, and young people are becoming more engaged in their learning, especially in the best lessons.

Professional learning opportunities have helped staff deepen their understanding of high-quality teaching and assessment. Teachers are starting to use more ways to check how pupils are doing, though there’s still potential to use this information more effectively when planning lessons to meet all pupils’ needs.

Good progress has been made in supporting pupils who need extra help. Teachers now have better access to information about individual needs, but more work is needed to tailor lessons to different ability levels. Making this approach consistent across the school will help ensure all young people are properly challenged and supported.

Reading, writing, and maths skills have shown improvement by the end of S3, and the school has introduced new plans and increased course options for older students (S4-S6) to further enhance their learning opportunities. The school is also reviewing the curriculum across all year groups to ensure a cohesive, step-by-step approach to learning.

Elgin Academy’s Head Teacher, Neil Johnson, said: “I’m happy that inspectors have recognised the progress we’ve made so far and the positive changes happening at Elgin Academy. We know there’s still more to do, and we’ll keep focusing on improving teaching so every young person can achieve their best.”

Moray Council’s Chief Education Officer, Vivienne Cross, commented: “This report highlights the positive progress Elgin Academy has made, particularly in literacy, numeracy, and the expansion of course choices for pupils. We’re confident that the school will continue to build on these strengths, strengthen teaching, and further raise attainment. An action plan is already in place, and the work underway will help drive continued improvement across the school.”

Overall, inspectors concluded that the school has made positive progress and is moving in the right direction. They will return within 18 months to review the impact of planned improvements.
