Moray Council adopts hydrogen strategy

The newly adopted Moray Hydrogen strategy was developed with Highland and Islands Enterprise (HIE) to coordinate the development of a hydrogen economy in Moray.

The strategy identifies opportunities for hydrogen developments in Speyside, Lossiemouth, Buckie, Keith, and Elgin.

Public engagement during the creation of the strategy revealed a very positive outlook that hydrogen can form part of the solution to achieving net zero. The strategy demonstrates that there is a demand for hydrogen within Moray and several opportunities to develop pilot projects which would retain significant benefits within the area.

An application to the North East Just Transition Fund has been made to secure funding for feasibility studies on pilot projects and the development of a costed delivery plan.

Chair Moray Council’s Economic Development and Infrastructure Services Committee, Cllr Marc Macrae, said: “Hydrogen will be a key resource in the transition to a low carbon future. With our abundance of natural resources in locally produced renewable energy, water, and offshore wind infrastructure, Moray is perfectly positioned to reap the benefits of the development of a local hydrogen economy.”
