Snowy playtime - 9 January 2026

Wintry weather updates – Friday 9 January 2026

As we head into the weekend and a further yellow weather warning for snow and ice lasting into at least Sunday, we reiterate the advice to follow Police Scotland and Traffic Scotland guidance around travel.

Looking ahead to next week and hopefully starting to see a significant thaw we’re sharing Scottish Water’s advice on avoiding burst pipes.

As we see temperatures rise, the thaw of significant snow drifts on higher routes increase the risk of flooding and standing water on roads. Given drains may still be covered and the amount of snow to melt, please take care when travelling around the region. Any disruption to services as a result of this will be shared on the Service Status Portal (SSP).

On Friday 9 January, gritting teams made it to some Priority 4 routes and are working on Priority 1-3 footpaths across Moray. Priority 1 routes were also treated from 4.30pm today and will continue to be treated over the weekend.

Grit bins continue to be refilled with the help of staff from other teams and contractors. Members of the public can find their nearest grit bin, and request refills, on the map here.

Please note: Moray Council’s Contact Centre is still experiencing high call and email volumes, so please bear with us if it takes a little longer to get through. For weekend contacts have a look at our emergency options here.

The registrar team is also dealing with higher than anticipated volumes of work and are working through requests as quickly as possible.

Thank you for your understanding as our staff do everything possible to catch up as quickly as possible while putting safety first.

Updates below as of 4.30pm on Friday 9 January.

A standalone update on waste collections and recycling centres is available here.

Schools

We expect all schools to be open on Monday 12 January and thank everyone who helped clear paths to get them open. Thank you also, to the school staff, pupils and families for their patience and professionalism this week while remote learning has been in operation.

Any changes to existing arrangements or school transport will be shared on the Service Status Portal before schools are due to start on Monday morning.

Transport

Any updates or changes to m.connect routes next week will be shared on the SSP.

Housing

We expect to be returning to more business as usual housing maintenance next week – priority will still be given to urgent repairs to weather damage but routine maintenance will start to be picked up again.

The housing team will be in touch with tenants to reschedule appointments from this week.

Care

Check with individual day centres for opening arrangements for next week. Details on vaccination centres will be provided by Health & Social Care Moray or NHS Grampian.

Anyone requiring care assistance or with concerns around care provision should email accesscareteam@moray.gov.uk.
